I have done some crazy things on a wedding day but the travel to and from Ashley and Justin’s Castle Ladyhawke wedding that I shot with my new friend Dan Dalstra was probably the craziest. I was contacted months before this wedding to see if I was available to help out a friend of a friend of mine. When I heard that it was at Castle Ladyhawke in Tuckasegee, NC AND that it would be with a fantastic photographer that is based in El Paso, TX I knew this was a wedding I didn’t want to miss.
I have wanted to shoot at the gorgeous Castle Ladyhawke for a long time. Ever since I first heard about the venue and viewed some images of this amazing wedding venue in the NC mountains online. It was beautiful and nestled on the side of a mountain I thought – sign.me.up. So, I left Raleigh at 0500 on the morning of the wedding and drove for 5.5 hours in on and off rain through Asheville, NC and then the rain stopped! The rest of the way it was just very overcast and the roads were a little slick going up and down the mountains but I arrived safe and early and in just enough time to take in the mountain views for a little bit before getting down to business of shooting.
I covered a lot of the details for the day as Dan was between the bride and the grooms rooms. I swapped out with him and got some alternate views of the preparations as well as the details for the day. And once everyone was dressed and we were ready to go it was game on. I loved all the details and the preparations for the day. Nothing was over looked as this was THE DAY for Ashley and Justin that they had waited for and planned for forever.
Thankfully there was no more rain for the rest of the day and we were able to have the dancing outside under the twinkle lights and stars. And there were some amazing views for the ceremony as the backdrop was nothing other than the NC mountains in all their glory.
We had full run of the castle and the portraits were AMAZING from minute one. The views. The couple. The moment – nothing was underwhelming. I left that day with a full heart and even though I had just met Ashley and Justin that day it was so fantastic to work beside someone who’s was thanked by name in the thank you speech from the bride. That speaks volumes. And they both thanked me upon their exit from the venue for all my hard work for the day. WOW! It was amazing!
We didn’t have much collaboration time but Dan was amazing. He was very encouraging and extremely supportive and in the end when all was said and done and he finally got to see what I had been capturing for the day, he was very impressed and pleased with what I had captured.
So, without further adieu – Enjoy some of my favorites from Ashley and Justin’s Castle Ladyhawke, NC wedding. I had to keep these under lock and key until he had shared the full gallery but wait no more! And after the drive up there, shooting 12 hours and partying the night away – I drove all 5.5 hours back to Raleigh in the cover of the night. I said it was a crazy thing for me to do and yes I realize that I was probably certifiable for doing it but the venue, the photographer, the couple and the DAY were so worth it. I crawled into bed at 0600 and went right to bed. I thank my 10 years of working nights as a Registered Nurse, the show tunes that I was belting out at the top of my lungs all the way home and my mom not going to sleep and texting for check-ins for my ability to make it home safe that morning. Angels were watching over me!
