This was my first time out with the Morton family and this was also my first time exploring an old/new location in Durham. The Duke Homestead in Durham, NC is THE place where the Duke family lived when they were farming and living in Durham. Of course they are the family that financed and built Duke University – so they are THE Duke’s. They built the university on farming and lots of farming of tobacco specifically so there are lots of old tabacco barns on the property as well as old farm equiptment and things that are from heritage days.
Overall the location is amazing and I am so glad that I now know this is a possibility for portrait locations. We happened to be there on a Sunday morning and we were litterally the only people on the property; well, us and a few stray cats. AND interesting enough little miss REALLY like the cats so even though I am allergic to them, I would actually call the cat to me so that she would look at me for the pictures.
It’s hard when you are two to take pictures. I remember what it was like. I too HATED the camera when I was younger. Interesting enough, I am now a photographer. Samantha was just so resistent to the sit and smile which most kids are so the portrait session turns into a play time session and one of my favorite images from this session was one caught on the fly when her parents were swinging her between the two of them by her hands. REAL joy on her face and nothing fake.
I hope you enjoy this fantastic Duke Homestead Family session and I hope to meet up with Morton family again as Samantha grows and grows!
